I did some research into waltzes tonight, trying to ascertain what waltzes the characters might have been playing during the circia 1810 action of the play.
Right away we can eliminate on chronological grounds the two most important waltz composers in classical music. Johann Strauss the elder was born in 1804, and Johann Strauss the younger was born in 1825, so neither of them could have written the waltzes performed during the action of the play.
I'm currently concentrating on Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and Josef Haydn (1732-1809). I've downloaded and rendered two MIDI files of Haydn piano concerto minuets, which definitely give a waltz feeling.
